Re: WorkCenter 6180MFP-D Scan Error 016-782

Joe:  Last month we had a 016-781 but that's because someone had accidently yanked the network cable with their foot.  Plugging the Xerox back into the network resolved that issue.  we have not received any other error besides 016-782 in the past few weeks.  If it's a login failure, might that be due to the fact that our server also handled active directory hosting services?  I provided the local credentials but it didn't make a difference.  All six workstations run Windows 7 and all four laptops run Windows 10.  We haven't tried testing scanning on the Windows 10 devices since they aren't used by those staff members who need access to scan functionality.

I actually wrote my original post while I was on hold to talk to a technical support person.  They verified my hypothesis by indicating it might be possible to initiate a scan on demand from a workstation, but it would not be possible to send outbound scans from the Xerox  without a DNS server.  Of course that was tier 1 support.  We don't have access to anything more.  If you have some insights they do not, I would be eager to learn more.

For anything after SMB1 (SMB2 and SMB3) you should use specific formatting of the username.

In Windows, the specific formatting is easy to view.

Add the user to the share, then type the name exactly as shown in the brackets.

For Windows 8 and 10, it will never be just username, it will always be Hostname\Username or Domain\Username or Username@Domain

I'm not sure where you're headed with this...  I just said the relevent workstations all use Windows 7.  Our Xerox detects it as SMB and there is no option to change it.  Since we don't use Windows 8 or 10 for scanning this seems appropriate.

Workcenter 7845 Scan to Email Customization

We have a 7845 with Scan to email configured and working using pre-loaded addresses (in address book and set as Favorites).

The problem is the default subject is alway the same, and pretty non-sensical.  Our process requires we scan copies of documents to standard email boxes, but the people getting them want the subject to reflect what it is - like Travel-form, or Purchase Card receipt.

Nothing very custom or specific - just 2 general subjects.

You can use the panel to change the subject when you press the 'email' button - but frankly the touch screen keyboard is yucky and we want something consistent. People will not make it the same, it will vary.

What I'd like is to use some type of default - Workflow scanning might work but workflow scanning does not scan to email (SMTP) that I can find.

If we could put the subject in the email address in the address book - that would work.

Right now, it is manual, tediuos and error prone to type in the "subject" on the screen.

Any help?

There is no way to do it other than set it at the device per scan.

Okay - thanks.  I was afraid of that.  Seems like a missing funciton in workflow scanning.

Re: Xerox Staples Partnership - OCR to USB and Print from USB doesn't work (orientation ALWAYS wron

As far as I know it's just the Android stuff.  I actually have a copy of a config page.  It is a Xerox Workcenter 7845 with system software 073.040.197.28500 Updated on Dec 28, 2017.  It's not machine specific.  "Print from USB" is Disabled in the printer which means it's Android's responsibility.

It's definately not my responsibility to fix it, but it's the operation I do most often at Staples.  I have two files, but can;t post them publicly which will preview correctly and print rotated.  One was not created at Staples.  The documents open corectly in Acrobat and readers I have used.  They PREVIEW properly on the Staples 7845.

I'm just hoping that someone involved with the project could do the test you just did.

It's very frustrating for me.

TWAIN/WIA driver of Xerox WorkCentre 6515 is *not* professional

The Xerox TWAIN/WIA driver of the WorkCentre 6515 does support black and white scans with “Text/Photo” mode only. The scans use dithering, which is ok for photos, but is *not* ok for text documents. Dithering scans of Text documents produce text with interspersed white speckles in text letters. Text in general appears rather grayish/white instead of black and white.

The local user interface (LUI) does support scans in plain vanilla “Text mode” and will provide improved quality when scanning text documents compared to using "text/photo" setting.

Currently, the "Text mode" option is *not* available with the TWAIN/WIA driver.

The Adobe Acrobat Support pages -> (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/acrobat/using/scan-documents-pdf.html) emphasize:

  • “Scanning tips: Avoid dithering or halftone scanner settings. These settings can improve the appearance of photographs, but they make it difficult to recognize text. “

Whereas the WorkCentre 6515 does support plain vanilla black and white scanning via LUI setting "Text mode", the current WorkCentre TWAIN/WIA driver supports black and white scanning with dithering only, i.e. corresponding to a LUI "Text/Photo" setting.

Thus, the current design of the WorkCentre 6515 TWAIN/WIA driver does not conform to the Adobe recommendations, making it difficult to have the Xerox WorkCentre 6515 work properly together with an industry standard legacy product, viz. Adobe Acrobat or other OCR applications.

The Xerox WorkCentre 6515 may safely be characterized as currently actively hampering professional office applications.

I’d appreciate a comment with respect to plans to amend the 6515 TWAIN/WIA driver, such that it supports a black and white “Text mode” as well.

Thanks

72 dpi grayscale almost as big as 600 dpi colour

I scanned two pages of 8.5"x11" in 72 dpi grayscale, yielding a 450KB PDF file.

I then scanned a 11"x17" page in 600 dpi colour, yielding a 528KB PDF file.

The total area of these two scans are the same, so I was expecting orders of magnitude different in file size due to the pixel density difference and the use of grayscale versus colour.  Why is the KB savings so meager?

I am using a Xerox WorkCenter 7855.

Size of a file has little to do with the physical size of the document you scanned , it is in the details of what was scanned.

Copy either of the documents in greyscale then in color using all the same settings and you should see some more dramatic differences.

If you want to see a real change in a single scanned doc, when you enable color, also enable OCR on an all text doc.

Call in to the support site and report your issue/findings so they can decide if they will proceed with a fix.

Thanks for your reply - yet I have already addressed this issue to support -> 3rd level support declined to come up with a fix, because "the driver works as designed". That's a management issue. I can't believe Xerox designs unprofessional products.

I came to this forum here to have this issue hopefully properly escalated.

My apologies, but this forum is peer-to-peer and not monitored by Xerox support officially.

I happen to be a 2nd level rep, and answer a lot of stuff here un-officially, but if you got through 2nd level to Engineering and they declined to fix it, there is no other avenue to use.

Your only option at that point is to do a FER (Feature Enhancement Request), which is still through calling Xerox, but instead of reporting the matter as broken, you are requesting a feature be added, and again, there would be no guarantee it would get implemented unless you actually paid them to develop the feature.

Probably cheaper and easier and certainly faster to switch to scanner from the device to an FTP server or SMB share which certainly will allow you to make the required change.

>>Probably cheaper and easier and certainly faster to switch to scanner from the device to an FTP server or SMB share which certainly will allow you to make the required change.<<

Standard office workflows engage dedicated document management systems, such as Paperport or Filecenter. Such dedicated scanning software require TWAIN/WIA drivers. Scannig from the device to an FTP server or SMB share just does not cut it.

I am very much under the impression that the responsible Xerox managers are not aware of the recommendations given by Adobe professionals - the Adobe link was not communicated to your support colleagues at the time.

I'd be happy to file a FER (Feature Enhancement Request), which may help Xerox design more professional products. Do you have s.th. like an email address or phone number of your FER colleagues?

Please advice how to proceed in that respect.

As far as I know a FER can only be done via phone calls to support.

Paperport has image retriever specifically to support the SMB/FTP workflow.

Understand, I am only suggesting the workaround to get you by, whether or not you choose to use it is up to you, but I consider a workaround to be much better than to tell you simply that it doesn't work like was done in the past.
