Being that you can't load the paper to be scanned it is pointless to try setting it up in the first place.
If remote means you are not on the same network, or at least VPN'd into it, you would need to put the printer on the Internet, which would be a terrible idea.
It would make vastly more sense to scan to email since that would have no issue getting out of the printers LAN.
But if you get past the whole "can't put the document to be scanned in the printer" part, and you have a VPN, put the printer on the internet for the world to do what they want with, then TWAIN or SMB makes no difference to your location, because the printer can reach your PC and vice versa
